Ottawa University Announces Scholarship Recipients

4/28/2014

Ottawa University is pleased to announce that eight students have been awarded scholarships as part of its spring Top Scholars competition. Each of the recipients is anticipated to be a full-time OU student beginning the fall of 2014.

Presidential Scholarship Recipients
Kaylee Asher of Shawnee Mission, KS, and Alexandria Straub of Lawrence, KS, were each awarded the Presidential Scholarship for their four-year educational tenure at OU. The Presidential Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship, with other benefits and honors, valued at a minimum of $80,000. Recipients will be required to continue their academic and leadership excellence throughout their time at OU.

Asher, who entered the competition with a 4.0 GPA, has declared as an English major; Straub, with a 3.56 GPA, has declared as an Elementary Education major. Following on-campus essays and panel interviews, the two Presidential Scholarships were awarded from 25 students invited to compete. Scholarship competitors are selected based on academic criteria (3.5 or higher GPA, 25 or higher ACT score, top 1/3 of class) and portfolios submitted prior to the competition.

President Kevin C. Eichner was personally involved in the selection process and is looking forward to the contributions the Presidential Scholars will make on the OU campus. “Ottawa University’s Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious of any we offer. Recipients are not only outstanding scholars; they are expected to distinguish themselves as leaders in many facets of student life. Many have gone on to exceptional careers in business, human services, the arts, education, and numerous other fields.”

Provost Scholarship Recipients
Kameron Blanding (3.87 GPA, Exercise Science major) of Courtland, KS; Joshua Buchanan (3.9 GPA, Undecided major) of Nixa, MO; Benjamin DeJarnett (4.0 GPA, Biology major) of Wellington, KS; Zachary Martin (4.0 GPA, Accounting major) of Salina, KS; TreAnna Mulkin (3.9 GPA, Secondary Education/History major) of Colorado Springs, CO; and Sarah Rocker (3.7 GPA, Elementary Education major) of Katy, TX, were each awarded the Provost Scholarship for their four-year educational tenure at OU. The Provost Scholarship is a three-quarter tuition scholarship, with other benefits and honors, valued at a minimum of $60,000. Recipients will be required to continue their academic and leadership excellence throughout their time at OU.

Following on-campus essays and panel interviews, the six Provost Scholarships were awarded from 25 students invited to compete. Scholarship competitors were selected based on academic criteria (3.5 or higher GPA, 25 or higher ACT score) and portfolios submitted prior to the competition.

Executive Vice President and University Provost Dr. Terry Haines was personally involved in the selection process and is looking forward to the contributions the Provost Scholars will make on the OU campus. “We are excitedly awaiting the arrival of the Provost Scholars to our campus this fall, and we expect that their contributions, both in and out of the classroom, will have an immediate positive impact on the experience of our entire student body.”
