School Guidance Counseling

The concentration in school guidance counseling emphasizes the complex demands of the school counselor by providing in-depth, realistic information to deal with students in a dynamic school and community environment including early intervention and team consultation. Program completion is designed to meet the school guidance counseling requirements for certification in Arizona. In Arizona, neither teaching experience nor teacher certification is required to be a school guidance counselor.

Concentration Courses - all concentration courses are required

  • EDC 7133  Counseling and the Helping Professions (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 7433  Social and Cultural Concerns in Counseling (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 8023  Designing and Leading Comprehensive School Guidance-based programs (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 7824  Life Planning/Career Development for School Counselors (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 8014  Professional and Ethical Issues for School Counselors (taken prior to practicum) (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 8463  Practicum in School Guidance Counseling (*min. 200 contact hours - subject to change)  (3 cr hrs)
  • EDC 7933  Group Counseling and Dynamics (3 cr hrs)
  • HRC 7000  Statistics Workshop (no credit)

Elective Courses

  • EDC 7163  Structured English Immersion for ELL (SEI II - 3 cr hrs) 
  • EDC 8613  Structured English Immersion for ELL (SEI III - 3 cr hrs)
SEI II and III must be taken before certification unless you have completed state requirements for SEI.
*practicum contact hours subject to change depending on Ottawa University and State Department of Education requirements. If your school site requires additional hours, you must comply with their requirements.
