Transfer Take 5! with Tia McGivern
What school did you attend prior to coming to OU and what is your major?
I attended the University of Kansas, and my major is Psychology.
How did you find out about OU’s transfer options?
I heard about Ottawa’s program from a friend of mine. He had similar experiences as I did at KU; the school was too big, you were known as number not by your name, it was hard to talk to your professors, and going to class was sometimes a drag.
From your experience, what are some important factors to consider when choosing an institution to finish your degree?
Some factors to take in consideration are how comfortable you feel at the school. Do you feel you can personally have a relationship with your professors, are you intimidated by the class sizes, and when you walk around campus and enter your classes are you greeted with a smile, and are you acknowledged? One amazing aspect about Ottawa is that I not only am learning so much in my degree, but I am learning how to form relationships with my professor and classmates, and having this trait can help you as you grow into your career field. Ottawa makes life ‘real,’ they teach the appropriate material for our majors, and they teach us how to be a considerate, healthy, and well-rounded person in society.
What is one piece of advice you would give to students looking to transfer?
Choose a school that fits YOUR lifestyle! A person shouldn’t have to give up their daily activities to pursue a degree. Choose a school based on your learning abilities, what you are comfortable with, and what makes you happy. Don’t let the school choose you, YOU choose the school.
If you had one “Don’t” to give to students, what would it be?
Ottawa was my first choice out of high school, and because I felt that I couldn’t afford it I made a wrong turn. Now, 9 years later, I am where I wanted to be. Don’t let money direct you down the wrong road.
What has been the best part so far in choosing Ottawa University?
The best part of Ottawa is the amazing flexibility I have as a full time employee. I don’t think I could have finished my degree at any other college. I also have made the best relationships with my professors, academic advisor, and financial aid advisor. When I enter the OU building I feel an overwhelming sense of belonging, I feel happier than I ever have as a student. Everyone is so willing to help, to greet, and to be a friend. The staff sincerely cares about ME and my achievements. If I could, I would be at OU student for life, they really do make me feel like I am family there, it is absolutely the best decision I have ever made.
