Minding Their Own Business

While many high school seniors were trying out the latest
video game, cruising Main Street or looking for the next
party to go to, Raymore, Missouri, student Jamison Shaw was
working with a lawyer to start his own company. Not afraid of
hard work, Shaw became aware of a need in the pool industry
for installation and maintenance. After founding Select Pool
Installation in the summer of 2005, he installed his first 20
above-ground pools and netted a healthy profit. Achieving
that kind of success simply through word of mouth made
Shaw wonder, “What else can I do?” He was quick to answer
his own question.

Using past experiences in construction and landscaping, as well
as contacts he had in various professions, Shaw began installing
concrete pads, building decks, remodeling rooms, plowing
snow, and beautifying lawns. “I knew someone who could do
whatever I needed,” he says. “So I would either learn how to do
it from them or subcontract the work out.”
