The Graduation Seen 'Round the World

Posted by Paula Paine on July 7, 2014 in "Your OU" From Cameroon, AfricNkamla.jpga, Jules Nkamla Tene already had both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science engineering, completing his graduate degree thesis at the European Business Directory in Paris, France, where he designed a new Internet-based advertisement platform. Nkamla Tene went on to build a similar platform for the African Business Directory when he returned to Cameroon, and later landed a Job with ExxonMobil, where he became the IT technical project coordinator for 13 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

After returning to Cameroon, Nkamla Tene met his wife, whom he married in 2005. The couple moved to Canada as permanent residents in 2008, and their daughter, Sasha, was born in 2010. When he decided to add a business component to his education, Nkamla Tene needed a flexible MBA program that allowed him to study while keeping his job and taking care of his family. Through an Internet search, he found Ottawa University of Kansas and realized it was exactly what he was looking for.

Nkamla Tene graduated in May from the online program, and, like more and more of OU’s online students, he flew to Kansas to take part in the commencement ceremony, thrilled that his wife and daughter could accompany him. His extended family was also thrilled when they learned they could watch him graduate via OU’s live streaming of the ceremony.

“Close to 50 people spread across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Africa watched online and provided feedback,” said Nkamla Tene. “Everyone was very impressed by the quality of the graduation ceremony, especially by the Dean of the School of Business speech. Today, those who could not watch the ceremony live are still able to watch it online (https://new.livestream.com/TheOttawaU). I have come to realize that the ceremony was inspirational, and some of my friends and co-workers are now excited about taking an MBA program, as well. I am so proud to refer them to OU as an excellent program.”

Nkamla-2.jpgFrom enrollment all the way through the commencement ceremony, Nkamla Tene says he had a wonderful experience at OU. “Andrea Cook was such a great counselor; she really assisted and encouraged me to succeed. My instructors were very knowledgeable, and I was quite amazed by the quality of the courses and the amount of effort required. I also really liked the fact that our instructors had real life experience that we could learn from. Overall, this was an excellent program, which has provided me with tools to make a ‘Life of significance’ at work, in my community and with my family.”

Since completing his MBA, Nkamla Tene has been involved in major strategic projects, both in Canada and the U.S., as an IT solution architect with Long View Systems, Inc. He hopes to continue to advance in his career and move into a role as an enterprise architect, chief information officer, chief technical officer, vice president of IT, or a similar role.

“Earning my degree is another proof of how determined I am in achieving my own goals and improving not only my life and my family’s life, but becoming an inspiration for those like me who are born in less favorable places in the world.”
