Business School - Moving Ahead

Posted by cservaes on March 12, 2012 in "Academic Programs", Alumni, "business degree", "business school", "Current Students", Events, "School of Business", "The College", Uncategorized The Angell Snyder School of Business continues to lead the University in enrollments and is being bolstered by a number of initiatives. “Guided by principles of continuous improvement and reinvention, The Angell Snyder School of Business is progressing on multiple fronts,” says Dean Dr. Kirk Wessell. “Our initiatives include building increased rigor in our existing majors, developing majors in important disciplines that integrate the liberal arts (e.g. business economics), exploring innovative knowledge delivery methodologies, and raising the consciousness of servant leadership principles through the David C. Owen Leadership Institute, to name a few.” Initiating the momentum for the School of Business was a luncheon held in New York City in September to honor Dr. Wayne Angell ‘52. Angell served as a professor of economics at Ottawa University and taught in the business program for almost 30 years; he also served for two terms on the Federal Reserve Board, as a Kansas State Representative, and as chief economist and senior managing director of Bear Stearns & Co. More than 80 of Dr. Angell’s associates attended the fundraising event to help pay tribute to his lifelong accomplishments and contribute to the Angell Snyder School of Business in his name. In October as part of Homecoming, Ottawa University hosted a gala event designed to recognize both of the School’s namesakes – Dr. Angell and Dr. Sherwin Snyder, who was with the University for 37 years as a professor of economics and dean of graduate studies. “With 67 years of combined teaching and leadership at Ottawa University, these men have forged personal legacies of preparing our students for lives of significance in the world of commerce,” said University President Kevin Eichner. The gala was followed the next day by the first annual Angell Snyder School of Business Symposium, which featured four high-powered workshops presented by School faculty and business alumni: “Organizational Resiliency” by Dean Dr. Kirk Wessel; “The Anatomy of an Acquisition” by retired Board Chair Jeff Hull; “The Deficit – Does Size Matter?” by Angell Chair of Economics Dr. Russell McCullough; and “Top Ten Leadership Lessons” by OU President Kevin C. Eichner. The David C. Owen Leadership Institute has become a vital part of the Angell Snyder School of Business. In addition to ongoing Leadership Matters seminars in our various markets, the Institute hosts a variety of events to provide learning and giving opportunities to students, alumni and the community. In September, the Institute hosted former President of the Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko and First Lady Kateryna for a panel discussion regarding political events and the path to democracy in that country. Yushchenko was presented with the first annual David C. Owen Leadership Award.A clip of David Owen presenting an award to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. On June 11, the Institute will host the second annual David C. Owen Leadership Institute Golf Classic at the Shadow Glen Golf Club to raise funds for the Ottawa Scholarship Fund and for Institute programming. To register, visit www.ottawa.edu/golfclassic, or see page 33. The newly formed Enterprise Division at Ottawa University will provide significant opportunities for expanding the reach of our business programs directly into businesses and organizations. Under the direction of Dr. Brian Sandusky, the value proposition of this unit is to enhance the effectiveness and performance of client organizations, as well as their management and staff, through the expertise and resources of a non-profit Christian-based higher education institution that specializes in adult learning. This will be accomplished through innovative and customized training programs built for both academic credit and non-academic credit. Programs will include development initiatives, organizational strategic partnerships, executive education that utilizes a customized executive MBA program, and organizational consulting services. The Business School Advisory Board is another asset within the School that is impacting its effectiveness and providing strategic input for current initiatives and future growth. The Board is tasked with ensuring that the following mission of the School is carried out: “An integrated and disciplined educational experience that develops global leaders who exercise innovative and critical thinking, impact their communities and lead lives of significance.” The Angell Snyder School of Business is one of the areas targeted within Ottawa University’s Advancing the Vision Capital Campaign, which is seeking $3 million for business programming additions and revisions, additional doctorate level faculty, experiential learning opportunities, workshops and certifications, and Enterprise Division outreach.
