Two March Concert Opportunities at OU

OTTAWA, Kansas - March 18 and March 20, 2007, will provide the Ottawa and surrounding communities with two opportunities to experience diverse musical events.  Sunday, March 18 will feature the Ottawa University Orchestra at 3:00 p.m. in the University Chapel, while Tuesday, March 20 will highlight the returning talent of the Goldenberg Duo at 7:30 p.m., also in the Chapel.  Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Under the direction of conductor Steven McDonald, the orchestra will present a program of Victorian and Edwardian English music, featuring works of Elgar, Stanford, German, Coates, and Arthur Sullivan.  Much of this music would have been heard in concert halls in the late 19th century, and one piece actually became a theme for BBC radio.

The OU Orchestra is comprised of students and faculty of the College, as well as community members and graduate students from the University of Kansas, and Park University.  2007 marks the 110th year of the orchestra's existence.  Their final concert of the year will take place on Sunday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., and will be a program of Baroque music.

The Goldenberg Duo is a brother and sister team that has been performing for 26 years at universities and festivals around the world.  The pair plays primarily chamber and contemporary music, with Susan on violin and William on piano. Selections during their upcoming concert will include "Norse Legend," by Bridge; "Miniature Viennese March," by Kreisler: "Dixie" and "Turkey in the Straw," by Norton; "It Ain't Necessarily So," by Gershwin; and "Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Opus 100," by Brahms, among others.

The Goldenberg Duo has captivated audiences at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy, The American Cathedral in Paris, and St. Peter's Church in St. Albans, England. They traveled to China in 2004 for concerts and master classes in Beijing, Shanghai, and The Hangzhou Conservatory of Music. The Duo performed in Scandinavia in 2005 in Stockholm, Retsken Art Gallery in Bergen, and Copenhagen. Their British Columbia tour in 2006 included concerts at The Vancouver Art Gallery and St. John the Divine Church in Victoria.  The Duo has also performed and taught in Australia and New Zealand in 2007.

The public is cordially invited to attend both of these concerts.
