5K University Race Open to the Public

The public's first chance to run on the new University track!

OTTAWA, Kansas - Runners of all ages are invited to take part in the 8th annual Ottawa University 5K Road Race, which will take place on Saturday, September 8, at 8:00 a.m. on the new University track around Peoples Bank Field. Funds raised from the race will benefit the Ottawa University cross-country/track and field teams.

The race originated as an OU alumni run but has since grown to include anyone in the community that wants to participate. Last year, the race hosted 35 OU alumni and 30 community members, ranging in ages from 11 to 71. At the conclusion of this year's race, a 100-meter fun run for kids will be held and all participants will receive a ribbon.

This year's race will be the first opportunity for members of the community to run on the new rubberized track. "It's a softer track and it's easier on the knees," said Kirk Wren, OU head cross-country/track and field coach. "We haven't had a legitimate track in 20 years and aesthetically speaking, it's great to look at."

The entry fee for each runner is $20 and there are five age groups in which to enter. Race registration forms can be downloaded by going to the Ottawa University cross-country website: www.ottawa.edu/OUAthletics/content/view/550. For further details about the race, please contact Coach Wren at 785-242-5200 ext. 5422 or via e-mail at kirk.wren@ottawa.edu.

Packet pickup will be from 7:00-8:00 a.m. on the morning of the race in Wilson Field House on the OU campus. The awards presentation will also be held in Wilson Field House.
