OU Braves Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct New Members

Mallory and Thorson are set to take their place

OTTAWA, Kansas - On October 19, 2007, two new members will be inducted into the Ottawa University Braves Athletic Hall of Fame (BAHOF) during the University's annual induction ceremony and banquet. The two inductees are 1993 graduate Kristin (Scheufler) Mallory of Lawrence, Kansas, and 1979 graduate Mark B. Thorson of Mission, Kansas (see biographies below). The induction of Kristin Mallory into BAHOF denotes the first time in OU history that both a father and daughter have been honored with membership. Mallory's father, Leonard H. Scheufler '67, was inducted into BAHOF in 1991.

The Ottawa University Braves Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1988 for the purpose of honoring those individuals who have gained recognition and fame for themselves and Ottawa University as a result of their endeavors and accomplishments while a student-athlete, coach or director of athletics at The College. Inductees are elected by the current membership. Candidates must have completed their degree at Ottawa University; distinguished themselves by being an outstanding athlete and bringing honor to OU by earning superior recognition and achievements within the league in which OU competed during their tenure; and must have completed their collegiate athletic competition at least ten years prior to selection. 

Kristin (Scheufler) Mallory

Education:

Ottawa University, BA 1993 - graduated cum laude in physical education

Mid-American Nazarene University - Health Certification 1994

Masters in Education Technology - Mid-American Nazarene University in 2007

Current/Past Business, Profession or Occupation:

Mallory is currently a physical education teacher and coach in the Lawrence School District. She has been teaching for 14 years, 13 of which have been at Southwest Junior High. Mallory is in her seventh year as varsity girls' basketball coach at Lawrence High School, and is athletic director at Southwest Junior High. She also was an assistant coach for the Lady Braves at OU for several years.

Family Members:

Husband - Michael Mallory (Class of 1992)

Sons - Jackson and Peyton Mallory

Father - Leonard Scheufler (Class of 1967 and OU Hall of Fame member)

Mother - Beverly Haworth Scheufler (Class of 1967)

Various other family members attended OU; Kristin was the 58th to attend.

OU Athletic Participation- athletic program(s), years, letters won:

Volleyball (1988)

Basketball (1988-1993) earned four letters. Second in career scoring with 1,300 points, fourth in career rebounds with 640 rebounds, fifth in career assists with 220, fifth in career steals with 168, second in career FG attempts and made with 44.80 percent, fourth in single game scoring with 32 points, a career scoring average of 12.8, was in the top 10 in many categories, and in the top 20 in several others.

Civic and/or Organizational Activities:

LEA and KNEA member, a member of Win 4 KC (girls'/women's sports organization in the KC area) and a member of PE for Life.

Honors and Recognitions while in college and after graduation:

Mallory was named PE Student of the Year at OU and graduated cum laude with honors in senior comprehensives. She was named All-KCAC each year for four years in women's basketball and earned all-district honors for two years. In addition to the basketball records listed above, Mallory's senior year basketball team had the most wins in a season and earned the first playoff berth in program history.  Recently, Mallory was named Lawrence High School Coach of the Year for 2007.

Other Information:

Mallory enjoys being a wife and mother, in addition to being an instructor in basketball camps and clinics with emphasis on skills and basics while fostering the love of the game. She is an advocate for women's sports and fitness in both the school system and the Lawrence community.

 

Mark B. Thorson

Education:

Independence Community College - attended for 2 years and came to OU in 1976

Ottawa University, BA 1979 - magna cum laude

Dean's List: 1977-78 and 1978-79

Heart of America All-Conference Academic Honors: 1977 and 1978

Current/Past Business, Profession or Occupation:

Thorson has been employed with Mallin-Gibson Lofts commercial real estate firm for the past 10 years while continuing to work as a clay artist. He played professional football for the Green Bay Packers of the NFL. Thorson has provided artwork for the Ottawa University auction for several years. He currently lives in Mission, Kansas and participates in juried art shows throughout the United States.

Wife - Tambra Thorson (married in 1982)

Son - Mark Thorson, Jr. (born in 1992)

Daughter - Katherine Thorson (born in 1994)

OU Athletic Participation- athletic program(s), years, letters won:

Football Red Shirt (1976); Lettered (1977, 1978)

He was named first team All-HAAC in 1977 and 1978. The 1978 team went 7-3. During Thorson's senior year, he was named first team All-District 10 and was also a second team All-American. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL) in the eleventh round and was the 290th selection of the NFL Draft.
