OU Student Places in National Media Competition
OTTAWA, Kansas - Ottawa University communications major Alli Small, junior, was recognized for her submission in the College Media Advisers Best of D.C. photo competition during the National College Media Convention in Washington D.C., October 24-28, 2007. Small competed against students from schools of all sizes and classifications across the U.S. and Canada, and was the only student from a Kansas school to place.
The two-part competition required students to take images at the convention following specific instructions and criteria. The photos were then judged by a panel from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, who, according to contest coordinator Bradley Wilson, were impressed with the quality of the images, especially given the rainy weather conditions during the conference.
"The conference was a great chance to get advice and opinions from other schools and professionals in various communication fields," said Small. "Participating in the photo contest was a great experience because it gave me a chance to hear critiques from several different people."

Also during the conference, Campus editor Nicole Lemons obtained a job interview with Swift Communications, a company with locations throughout the United States. Her resume was selected from a large pool of resumes and cover letters submitted by students at the conference; only four students from Kansas schools achieved interviews. Lemons hopes that the interview will lead to a career opportunity in Arizona, Colorado, California, Nevada or Oregon.
The Campus is a bi-weekly publication that is distributed on the Ottawa University campus, at locations in the Ottawa community and on the internet at http://www.thecampusnewspaper.com/. It is advised by Kara Cunningham, assistant professor of communication studies.
