Ottawa University senior Tyler Hinton wrapped up a stellar wrestling career with a national runner-up finish in the 141-pound weight class at the NAIA National Wrestling Championships on March 5, 2016.
In the championship round, Hinton, who entered the tournament unseeded, was defeated in a fall by Andrew Schulte of Concordia University) to finish second.
Hinton won his first match of the day with a 19-10 major decision over Anthony Ashford of St. Catharine (Ky.). In his second match of the championship round, he earned a sudden victory over Sonny Gulesian from Briar Cliff University, SV-1 14-12, to move on to the quarterfinals. In that match, Hinton earned a victory by a fall over Steele Escobedo of Menlo University. He then won a major decision, 12-4, over Matt Weber of Montana State-Northern to advance to the championship round.
Hinton was named a NAIA All-American for the second year in a row and earned NAIA National Wrestler of the Week honors on January 27.
His senior campaign included a 141-pound title at the Kansas Cup held at Newman University; he was also named Outstanding Kansas Cup Wrestler.
