From the President
Spring 2017

Welcome to our spring Spirit magazine! It is difficult to believe we are getting ready for yet another commencement celebration season as this academic year moves to a close in a few weeks. It is always a time to remember why we do what we do as graduates of extraordinarily diverse ages and backgrounds take that special walk to pick up their hard-earned diploma from Ottawa University. It is a walk that folks have taken for 152 years!

Moving on to current events and observations, on February 17, we officially announced our plans to open a brand new residential campus in Surprise, AZ, which will welcome its first students this coming fall. This is both a missional and strategic move for our institution, an initiative which has been under consideration for over five years. This effort has been made possible by generous gifts from donors who share our vision for the future of OUAZ and who appreciate the desire and need for OU to continue to grow while meeting the lifetime needs of its thousands of students who deserve to taste the Ottawa Spirit. If you visit us in Surprise, you will find tremendous energy and enthusiasm for this extension of the Ottawa mission and we are excited to be able to finally bring this effort to fruition. I look forward to sharing updates with you over the coming months and in future Spirit Magazines as we embark on this latest outreach of Ottawa University into a world that seems to need more and more of what we do and teach every day.

Our beloved College in Ottawa is also bustling with activity over the next couple of months as the Schendel Conference Center plays host to several conferences. The Women in Gold Leadership Conference, the 22nd Annual Baseball in Literature and Culture Conference and a special Non-Profit Leadership Workshop will give students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as the Ottawa and Kansas City communities an opportunity for some exciting learning and dialogue.

OU alums are invited to a gathering for our east coast friends in Tarrytown, NY, on June 2, and the Braves Classic Golf Tournament in Ottawa on June 23. I am looking forward to connecting with those of you who are able to join us at those events. Our alumni exemplify what we attempt to teach on an everyday basis, and you are a key part of the fabric that makes our school what it is.

I hope you enjoy this latest edition of Spirit Magazine. If you haven’t been to campus (any of them) to visit us in a while, I encourage you to make the trip. We would love to see you.

In the Ottawa spirit,

Kevin C. Eichner ’73, MBA, LLD ’08
