Accounting
The Accounting major helps students understand and master the conceptual framework used to measure and report an organization's financial events.
In accordance with professional and ethical standards, students analyze and evaluate accounting practices and systems to understand how they should and do function in business entities. They learn fiduciary responsibility and how to communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
This major promotes skills in problem solving, decision-making, systems analysis, and planning within financial, economic, managerial, and technological contexts. Accounting is an important foundation for careers in finance, auditing and administration within both the public and private sectors.
Beyond the Classroom
While pursuing the accounting degree, participation in activities outside of the classroom is encouraged to broaden your education. Possibilities include:
• Internships with accounting firms and other businesses,
• Opportunities to study abroad, and
• Experiences with real-world applications through pro-bono tax preparation and other activities.
Beyond the Degree
OU accounting graduates have been prepared with real-world experiences brought alive in a learning environment leading to readiness for the next step-graduate school or a career in public or private practice.
"My studies at OU, in accounting and related subjects, prepared me to enter graduate school and complete my MBA. I am now working in my chosen field ready to take on the challenges in front of me."
Bridget Medlin, MBA Alumna '04
Who's Preparing You?
OU's business faculty do more than teach. Each member of our faculty has current first-hand experience in the business world, practicing the principles of business they now teach. They are national award winners and their educational backgrounds, technical expertise and business achievements make them uniquely qualified to be your teachers, mentors and role models.
"Our goal is not to turn out narrowly-focused number crunchers-we offer a broader program than that. While providing a solid accounting education we emphasize development of other skills needed for success in the business world. Accounting rules may change; the importance of knowing how to adapt, how to think will not."
- Lyn Wagner, Assistant Professor of Accounting
