The Ottawa University dancers perform at most home football and basketball games. We hope to also support the women's basketball team and dance at other campus events. The team practices Sunday evenings, Tuesday and some Thursday mornings, and Wednesday evenings. The school provides uniforms and poms. Team members should plan to purchase shoes and accessories, though often the funding may be available to pay for most of these expenses as well.

Try-outs are held in spring. If scheduling conflict exists with the try-out dates, then performance videotapes may be accepted by permission of the dance team coach. Some years there may also be a fall try-out in August if all positions on the team have not been filled.

Dancers are judged on dance performance skill level, leaps, turns and toe touch, dance technique, appearance, enthusiasm, and memorization. Dancers will learn and perform a short dance taught the day of the try-outs.

Scholarships are available for those who meet qualifications and maintain participation in this student activity.

WHO MAY TRY-OUT

Try-outs are open to any student that may be interested in performing with a collegiate dance team and would like to be considered for an activities scholarship. The Dance Team Application Request and all other requested documents should be supplied. We will choose those candidates that exhibit impressive skills and talent, as well as the ability to learn routines quickly. (Experience is helpful but not required).

HOW TRY-OUTS WILL RUN

The audition will be performed in small groups before an evaluation panel. Skills will be performed individually and then each group will dance the short routine twice, offering the opportunity to perform your very best. There may also be individual interviews given throughout the day, held between the candidate and team coach.

ATTIRE: Clothing should be comfortable and appropriate. Black jazz pants and a tank top are preferred but similar attire is acceptable for the audition. Shoes should be comfortable and give the proper support (either tennis shoes or dance shoes).
