Unexpected Hope

“You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” Psalm 119:114

Rushing to work one early fall morning, rough green leaves peaked out of the hanging basket I had stopped watering in August.

A few mornings later, pale pink petunias smiled up from that same spot.  I was certain I had not planted nor bought pink petunias this year. They are a favorite. My grandfather had petunias every summer in the big round planter by the back door.  He called them “petunies” mostly to tease us grandkids as we planted them with his guidance.

The surprise of these sweet pink flowers lifted my spirits each morning, recalling my grandfather and my mother and the days of summer planting with all the family. The flowers lasted through October and each day they filled my prayers with gratitude and hope.

As we await the wonders of Christmas, may we open our eyes to the little surprises found in unexpected places. Let God’s presence fill our moments and lift us.

What practices might you add to your day to encourage a new look at the mundane?
Maybe pause for a moment before you get into your car?
What moments can you set aside to encourage reflection instead of rush?
Maybe slow down the first few steps as you leave your home?  What works for your day in your life?

Prayer

God of Wonder and Hope, grant us moments of unexpected grace, allow our hearts to be ready for the hope you show us; help us to set aside time to be present with you in this season of waiting. We pray, with hope, as we lift our hearts to you.  Amen.
