Hurrying Destroys Peace of Mind

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” Mark 8:36

As we enter the sacred season of Advent, we find ourselves immersed in a society that often propels us toward a frenzy of activity. December frequently becomes synonymous with haste—rushing to parties, confronting crowded stores, and tackling the multitude of tasks associated with holiday preparations. In a world that equates speed with success, we may inadvertently overlook the importance of stillness and contemplation.

Advent summons us to reverse this trend, inviting us to slow down and engage in meaningful reflection. Mahatma Gandhi poignantly asserted, “There is more to life than increasing its speed.” His words serve as a gentle reminder that life’s profound richness lies not in perpetual motion but in moments of pause and introspection. When we allow ourselves to slow down, we not only create space for our own thoughts and feelings but also extend that grace to those around us. It is in these quiet moments that we can deepen our connections, cultivate inner peace, and discover the beauty woven into the fabric of everyday life.

This season is meant to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the coming of Christ into the world. It calls us to seek the quiet joy and tranquility that Advent promises, mirroring the patience exemplified by Mary. Rather than succumbing to the pressure of haste, let us return to a place of inner peace, focusing on what is truly central to our lives.

To aid in our preparation during this holy season, consider the following reflective questions:

  1. What does slowing down during this season mean for me?
  2. How can I create moments of peace in my life amidst the holiday rush?
  3. In what ways can I enhance my relationships with family and friends, particularly with those with whom I may have conflicts during the Advent season?
  4. What simple joys have I overlooked in my hurried daily life?
  5. How can I embody the patience and grace that Mary illustrated during her own significant moments?

Prayer

Slow me down, Lord. Help me release the urge to rush and trust more in Your plan. Give me the grace to lean on You, and let Your peace fill my heart this Advent season. May I rest in Your presence, allowing You to guide my steps, trusting in Your perfect timing. Amen.
