During his two years at Ottawa University, Desmond was a standout running back for the Braves football team, earning First Team All-KCAC recognition in 1993 and 1994. He was also named Second Team All-NAIA during the 1993 season. In 1993, he led the KCAC in rushing yards per game with 150.4 yards. That same year he also led the conference in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per game. He had 16 rushing touchdowns and scored three touchdowns in a game three different times. In 1994, he rushed for 104 yards per game and had 18 kick returns for 376 yards, including one touchdown. He is currently tied for fourth in single game rushing (252 yards versus Southwestern College) in the school record book and is fourth overall in career rushing (2,574 yards).

During the start of football his senior year, he began to feel sick. Even with a reduction in conditioning and workouts, his condition did not improve. After the last game of the year, his coach sent him to the University of Kansas for some testing; the results came back positive for cancer. He completed the year at OU and returned home to Texas for treatments with the support of his parents. At the age of 23, Desmond passed away. He was taking classes at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and his dream was to work as a PE teacher in the inner city. He would have completed his student teaching practicum the following fall.
