Mijares lettered in cross country (1980-83) and track (1981-84) for the Braves. He was voted the 1983-84 OU Male Athlete of the Year.

As a member of the OU cross country team, helped lead the Braves to the 1980 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Team Championship. Mijares finished second at the 1984 KCAC Cross Country Championship, earned All-HAAC honors, and qualified for the 1983 NAIA Cross Country National Championship.

On the track, Mijares was a 1984 NAIA Indoor All-American in the 1,500 with a time of 4:16. In 1981 he earned All-HAAC Indoor honors with a individual championship in the 1,000.Mijares earned All-HAAC Indoor honors a year later in 1982 in the mile and the two mile. In the 1982 outdoor season, he was the HAAC Individual Champion in the mile run and the three mile run. Mijares earned All-KCAC honors in 1983 in the 1500M. Mijares helped lead the Braves to the 1981 HAAC Outdoor Team Championship and the 1982 HAAC Indoor and Outdoor Team Championship.

After graduating from Ottawa University, Mijares went on to medical school and did his residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He is now an Internal Medicine Physician in Wakeeney, Kan.
