The conference served as an opportunity for pastors and lay people to better understand the meaning of spiritual formation through the series “Become Like Jesus” presented by the Reverend Dr. James Bryan Smith. Smith is a theology professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. He is a writer and speaker in the area of Christian spiritual formation and is a founding member of Renovaré, a spiritual renewal ministry started in 1987 by Richard J. Foster. Pastor of First Baptist Church of Ottawa Reverend Joel Fredrikson ’75 participated in the conference and led worship on Wednesday afternoon, followed by an open discussion posing the question, “How can the church become a community of grace?” The conference concluded with small group discussions and worship led by Carlos Martinez. The Fredrikson Center for Faith and Church Vitality at Ottawa University was named in honor of the Reverend Dr. Roger L. ’42 and Ruth ’45 Fredrikson. The Fredrikson Center supports all student ministries on campus and acts as a gathering place in which theologians, church leaders, faculty members, pastors and laypeople can come together to dialogue, study, conduct research, provide and receive consultation, and collaborate to advance the life and vitality of the church. Next year’s conference will be held on March 14 & 15 at The College and will feature Renovaré founder and renowned spiritual author Richard Foster and his son Nathan.
