From the President

Posted by cservaes on September 17, 2012 in "Academic Programs", Community, "Current Students" At this writing, summer is winding down, although I have found it advisable to visit our Arizona campuses to escape the Kansas heat! I hope it has been an enjoyable and pleasant one for each of you. There is anticipation and excitement, as well as challenge, as we ready our institution for our annual fall openings. In this issue of Spirit, we will bring you more exciting news of our progress toward our Advancing the Vision Capital Campaign and preview our activities as we launch the public phase of that campaign. We have been blessed by some incredible generosity with five, one million dollar-plus gifts--three more than in the entire prior history of OU! These gifts have been augmented by a $750,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation toward the completion of our new Gangwish Library and Gibson Student Center to be built on our home campus in Ottawa. We are enormously grateful and encouraged by this level of giving, but we must now build on these gifts in the public phase of our campaign to make our dreams a reality. This issue of Spirit and other publications will draw attention to our remaining needs among the broader OU family of alumni, friends, and colleagues. Never before have we had so many opportunities. Never before have we had so many needs. We will need the broadest and most intensive participation from our friends to achieve our final objectives, especially since the Mabee Challenge gift must be met by July 10 of 2013—less than a year away. From the President As always, there are many initiatives underway as we head into our fifth year of our Vision 2020 strategic plan. At our annual July planning advance, our team spent time on honing these initiatives in academic affairs, enrollment management, student experience, governmental and regulatory affairs, finances, marketing and human resource planning. One especially exciting exercise was the refinement of our vision statement as we prepare for our upcoming Higher Learning Commission re-accreditation visits late next year. I thought you might enjoy reading it: “By 2020, Ottawa University will be positioned as a rapidly expanding institution known for its innovative educational models, exceptional value, and special ability to prepare diverse student populations for lives of enlightened faith, exemplary service, inspired leadership and personal significance.” You have helped make it possible for us to legitimately aspire to such a vision. We will be calling on you increasingly to help us realize it. Thanks for your commitment and contributions in all of their forms. In the OU Spirit, Kevin C. Eichner
