Up and Coming

Posted by Paula Paine on May 14, 2015 in Not only is the new Gangwish Library well on its way up, but the Hetrick Bistro within the new Gibson Student Center has students coming, going and hanging out at all hours as the new gathering place on campus.
Whether studying for a test, watching a sporting event on the big screen, grabbing a meal, or just visiting with friends, students are taking full advantage of the new Center and Bistro. It is also playing host to events, such as the BAHOF banquet and, most recently, the “party portion” of the University’s 150th Opening Ceremony on January 22.
The addition of Starbucks’ to the menu line-up this spring has also increased traffic to the Bistro from both students and the community. Dean of Student Affairs Tom Taldo was instrumental in bringing the “We Proudly Serve Starbucks” location to the Center as the sole Starbucks server in Ottawa. “By providing this well-known brand to our students and our friends in Ottawa, we have a wonderful platform for showcasing the new Gibson Student Center and Hetrick Bistro and bringing more people to campus,” he said. “It’s a win-win.”
Counterpart to the Gibson Student Center, the Gangwish Library is exhibiting daily transformation as construction is on schedule and on budget. One needs only a little imagination now to envision banquets taking place in the expansive Schendel Conference Center, alumni strolling past the history mural on their way to the University store, or students mixing study with conversation in the modern spaces of the library.
The two structures will be joined and construction completed in time for the fall 2015 semester. On Friday, October 16, during a special Homecoming ceremony, the building will then be dedicated to mark the culmination of OU’s 150th year. During the event, the new book, 150 Years of Significance:  Ottawa University at Its Sesquicentennial (Spirit and Story), will also be released, and a sprawling mural chronicling OU’s history will be unveiled.
As promised, OU is Advancing the Vision through facility, academic, athletic, and endowment growth – all made possible by our incredible alumni and friends. We invite you to campus to see for yourself how the Ottawa vision is being lived out by faculty, staff and students alike.
