OU bowling coach Geoff Poston was named the 2016-2017 Girl’s Bowling Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Poston came to OU from Topeka Seaman High School, Topeka, Kan., to lead the new OU bowling program this past fall.

“It is always nice to be recognized by your colleagues,” said Poston. “Especially with an award of this magnitude. All of the kids I have had the opportunity to coach over the years have all played a role in winning something like this. To be able to move onto the college level to teach, mentor and coach young men and women is something that I do not take for granted.”

The NFHS, in collaboration with member state associations, select coaches for state, sectional and national recognition each year. The Midwest Section includes the states of Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

OU bowling’s inaugural season was marked with numerous highlights. The women’s team had eight top 10 tournament finishes out of 12 tournaments, including winning the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge. They qualified for the postseason, placing 8th at the ITC Sectional Qualifier. Freshmen Sasha Bengtson and Hannah Middaugh were named to the NCBCA All-Academic Team.

The men’s team completed their season with six top 10 tournament finishes.

Both teams were young, led by two juniors, one sophomore and 15 freshmen. Poston has been busy recruiting for the 2018-2019 season.

“We are recruiting kids from all over the country,” Poston said. “The teams stayed together and fought hard all year. I look forward to adding our 2018 class to this group.”
