OU Athletes Compete at National Tournaments

Posted by Janae Melvin on June 28, 2017 in This spring, several Ottawa University student-athletes were able to experience competing in the national tournament for their respective sport. For many of these athletes, it was the first trip to the national championships in their career.

Earning its first trip to the NAIA National Invitational, the women’s lacrosse team faced no. 1 SCAD-Savannah in the first round. The Braves fought hard, but lost the match 19-8. The team, which also won the KCAC Championship, finished the season ranked no. 10 in the NAIA Coaches Postseason Poll.

Junior Bryanna Music was a two-time NAIA All-American, winning honors in both indoor and outdoor track and field. Music competed in the weight throw and shot put at the 2017 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships where she finished fourth overall in the weight throw with a throw of 59-03, earning NAIA All-American honors. She is the first indoor track and field All-American at OU since 1993. She finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 43-00.50. This was Music’s third straight NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

During the 2017 NAIA Outdoor National Championships, Music placed fourth overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-0.275, a new school record and an All-American honor. She also competed in the shot put, finishing 26th with a throw of 41-03.75.

Sophomores Laura Yancey and Michael Jensen also qualified for the 2017 NAIA Outdoor National Championships. Yancey finished 21st in the javelin with a throw of 116-11.50 and Jensen also placed 21st in the shot put with a throw of 47-06.25.

The men’s volleyball team, in only its second year of competition at OU, qualified for its first NAIA Invitational Tournament this spring. The men fell short in the first play-in game, losing to no. 8 Missouri Valley College, 3-1; 23-25; 25-23; 23-25, 23-25. At one point during the season, the team was ranked as high as the no. 2 team in the nation. They finished the year ranked no. 7 in the coaches postseason poll.

The OU Cheer and Dance teams travelled to Orlando, FL., for the 2017 NCA/NDA National Championships. The cheer team, making its fifth straight appearance at nationals finished ninth in Small Coed Cheer Division II while the dance team, making its fourth straight appearance, finished third.
