Ottawa University to Celebrate All-Steinway Designation with Free Concert

11/7/2017
Ottawa, Kan. – Ottawa University will celebrate its recent designation as an All-Steinway School with the 2017 All-Steinway School Gala Concert featuring world-renowned pianist Bill Mays. The celebration event will take place on November 11 at 7:30 p.m., at Fredrikson Chapel on the campus of Ottawa University. The concert is free and open to the public.

Mays, a Steinway Artist and US Navy Veteran, has conducted a career as a professional musician spanning the last 55 years and includes a multitude of musical endeavors. A prolific composer and arranger, Mays has written many extended suites for bass, flute, woodwind septet, and pieces for big band and orchestra including the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Turtle Creek Chorale, WDR Big Band, and U.S. Air Force Airmen Of Note. Mays’ songs have been used in the movies Anamorph, Burn After Reading, Hamlet, Looker, and The Fifth Estate. His keyboard work has been heard on hundreds of film soundtracks, including Fargo, Fur, Godfather 2, Hail, Caesar!, Jaws 2, Julie & Julia, Rocky 2, Superman, The Big Lebowski, and The Spanish Prisoner.

The concert will also feature performances by the Ottawa University Concert Choir, OU’s Director of Choral Activities Serena Eichhorn and Adjunct Piano Instructor and OU Staff Accompanist Bridget Clonts.

Mays is also offering a free jazz piano clinic in Fredrikson Chapel on Friday, November 10 from 1-2:15 p.m.

By earning the All-Steinway Designation, Ottawa University joined a select group of colleges and universities around the world. OU is only the third school in the state of Kansas to achieve this distinction, joining Benedictine College in Atchinson and Kansas State University. As an All-Steinway School, OU will use only Steinway & Sons pianos in all aspects of performance and teaching.

As part of the process towards becoming an All-Steinway School, OU completed a lease/purchase program to purchase 10 Steinway or Steinway built pianos. Steinway is known throughout the world for its high standard of excellence and its products are considered the best keyboard instruments for training students.

“This distinction to the college and the music program in particular is a true testament to the tremendous financial support we receive from our alumni and friends,” said Paul Bean, vice president for University Advancement.
