We are thankful for the generous contributions of two outstanding alumna, Dr. Wayne Angell and Dr. Sherwin Snyder, and their families in founding the Ottawa University Angell Snyder School of Business.
Dr. Wayne Angell graduated from Ottawa University in 1952. Having earned his master’s degree from the University of Kansas, Angell returned to Ottawa University in 1956 to teach Economics. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics in 1957 from the University of Kansas. During his tenure here through 1985 he served as Department Chair, Division Chair and College Dean.
Dr. Angell was appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1985, where he served two terms and earned a reputation as an “inflation hawk”. He served three terms in the Kansas State House of Representatives from 1960 to 1966 and also served as Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of Bear Sterns & Co. where he analyzed U.S. and global economic trends. Having left Bear Stearns in 2002, Dr. Angell now works as a consultant in economic and monetary policy forecasting.
Wayne Angell and his wife, Betty, are active members of the First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. He has served as President of the Kansas Baptist Churches, as a Trustee of the Kansas Baptist Foundation, as Vice-Chairman of the Board of International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches, and as Program Committee and Resolutions Committee Chair of Conventions of the American Baptist Churches.
Dr. Angell has been the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award from the University of Kansas, Who’s Who in America, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Ottawa University, Distinguished Kansan of the Year of the Native Sons and Daughters, as well as the Distinguished Service Award and Outstanding Achievement Award from the Ottawa University Alumni Association.
Dr. Sherwin Snyder joined Ottawa University’s teaching staff in 1960 as Professor of Economics and Organization Administration. He taught at both the Ottawa, Kansas and Phoenix, Arizona campuses for a total of 38 years, serving as Director of Graduate Studies in Human Resources and Dean of Graduate Studies. He retired from the University in 1998.
During his tenure, Dr. Snyder served as Chairman of the Department of Economics and Organization Administration, Chairman of the Social Science Division, Chairman of the President’s Task Force on University Governance, member of the College Without Campus task force, and faculty representative to the Board of Trustees.
Indicative of his popularity among students and innovative teaching methods, Dr. Snyder was named Faculty Member of the Year four times by the graduating classes of the college in Ottawa, Kansas.
Prior to his service at Ottawa University, Snyder was a public accountant for Arthur Young and Company. He also served as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kent State University, a master’s degree from Ohio State University and a Doctor of Business Administration from Indiana University.
