Day 17 - December 19, 2017

Forgiveness has No Price

“Then Joseph said to his brothers, 'Come close to me.' When they had done so, he said, 'I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.'” Genesis 45:4-5

Genesis 45: 4-5 is a part of a beautiful story about a young man named Joseph who had many adventures in his lifetime. Joseph is an outcast in his large family of 12. His brothers quickly grew jealous of the dreams that Joseph was seeing, so they decided to get rid of him. They came to the conclusion that they would be better off without him, so they sold him as a slave in Egypt; however, God had a different plan. In His plan, Joseph was set to govern the land, and would eventually see his brothers come crawling back to him. God showed Joseph’s brothers the true meaning of humility. Joseph forgave his brother’s for their actions and helped them when they did nothing but harm him.

Joseph is a true symbol of humility. Joseph used his circumstances to better the lives of the people around him. I believe society is missing this in today’s world. Forgiveness is one of the simplest actions to do, yet almost no one wants to do it. Why? Because grudges, mental barriers, and stereotypes hinder our thoughts leading us to focus on how we repay others that have wronged us. People are stuck with hatred towards a person for a certain action, and forget it could have been a simple mistake.

As God’s children, how can we go against this common occurrence? The first step is finding forgiveness in our own hearts. The only price that we pay for forgiveness is regret. This weight of guilt sits in our hearts and holds precious time, memories, and life with our past issues. Humble your hearts, and throw out any pain from your body. Take steps towards God to live a life as Joseph did. Show humility in your actions towards the people in your life. Hand out forgiveness free because the price for it is much higher if you hold it for long.
God lift our hearts from the pain we are holding. As we prepare for the birth of your Son, show us how to forgive as you taught Joseph many years ago. We love you, and all your children. Let us live lives where love is vibrant and full of many colors. In this season of preparation, show us the light, and bring us out of the hardships of the past. Let us move on past old hostilities, and move towards new friendships. Show us how to be the example for people around us, and to fill others with kindness. Thank you for your love, humility, and patience. Amen.
