Day 3 - February 16, 2018

Pay It Forward

Matthew 6:16-18

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18
Maybe instead of ‘giving up’ something we could all join the ‘pay it forward’ movement this Lent? Often the bright spot in our local news, the Spirit seems to be moving many to do random acts; in kindness and without waiting around for recognition or reciprocity.

From the drive-thru line to the overdue books at the library, folk are finding creative ways to do good, large and small. Often they don’t even know who will benefit. It seems even better to me when the newscaster says it was a ‘good Samaritan’ or someone who ‘wishes to remain anonymous’.

Maybe this 40 days could be filled with contagious secrets and unseen kindnesses. Who wants to be somber and disfigured anyway!
God of unseen blessings and heavenly rewards, help me to find time and strength to do my part. Grant me the mindfulness and opportunity to leave anonymous gifts in unexpected places; especially in the lives of those most in need of reminders of Your grace and care.
