Day 5 - February 19, 2018

It Has Been a Long Time

Psalm 39:12

“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.” Psalm 39:12

A dear friend from younger days came to visit—actually it was just by chance that our schedules aligned. My friend lives out on the coast having moved there after school for work and love. It had been a long time; we exchanged gifts, chatted absently and then gently the rhythm of our friendship began to play and softly years faded.

We were not reminiscing or gossiping—we were just listening and hearing; truly interested and a bit surprised by the ease and comfort of an old friend. We took a walk and then found our way to cars and kind goodbyes. Just like old times, as if not a day had passed.

Time for friendships (long ago or in every day) lingers at the end of a long to-do list. And true too, time for prayer lingers there as well. Yet, when time meets with heart-intention-- the conversation, the hearing, the quiet—the nourishment.

Surprise yourself, set the time and meet it with open heart. Be greeted and welcomed. Just show up.

Dear Lord,
The list does not match the heart’s intent; help me to clear away the things that clutter the list and grant me the wisdom and courage to show up. Amen.
