Day 14 - March 1, 2018

Give Thanks

James 1:27

“In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Although there are ample inspirational versus throughout the Bible, this one has become one of my favorites over time. In the book The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, Betsy ten Boom (Corrie’s sister) offers thanks in a prayer to God for their flea-infested bunk. Betsy was in very harsh circumstances, in a Jewish concentration camp, constantly being dehumanized, and sharing a bunk with fleas. In this, she still found reason to be grateful and to praise God. Betsy was thankful to still be with her sister Corrie, she was thankful they had a Bible so they could read God’s word, and she was thankful for the fleas. Later the girls realized that because their bunk was flea-infested, the guards rarely (if ever) came inside to do room checks. With this, they were able to regularly do Bible studies and read to others in the bunk who had nearly given up.

Betsy being genuinely thankful gives me motivation and reminds me to constantly thank God for everything He has given me. It may seem like a simple task, but to genuinely thank God for those things in your life you wish were different can be trying. In my experience, the more I am thankful, the easier it is for me to be positive and well in undesirable situations. Pray with me.

Lord, I thank You for this day and all it has brought. I thank You for this Lenten season and I pray that each sacrifice made this season is to honor You. I thank You for the difficulties and temptations in my life and I thank you for the never-ending joy and spirit. Amen.
