OUAZ Names Tim Montez Head Baseball Coach
– OUAZ Director of Athletics, Kevin Steele, is pleased to announce the hiring of Tim Montez as the head baseball coach for the Ottawa Spirit baseball team at its new location in Surprise, Arizona.
“We are blessed to have Tim (Montez) on our staff,” said Steele. “His work speaks for itself. He has been successful at the NCAA Division 1 level for years and has done so without ever compromising the person for winning. He proves that his commitment is to the building of young men and that baseball is merely the tool he is blessed with to use in doing so. With the opportunity he has to build from ground zero and play in one of the finest facilities in the U.S.; where the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers make their spring training home. We are going to see him do incredible things with Spirit baseball!”
Montez recently completed his third season as Head Coach of the Jacksonville University baseball program. In 2016, nine Dolphins were placed on the various all-conference teams, including three on the first team. Jacksonville lead the Atlantic Sun Conference in earned run average and fielding percentage, won its most games (33) since 2011, won five of seven conference series, and finished just 3 games out of first place. Jacksonville posted a season sweep of nationally ranked Florida State for the first time ever, and defended its home turf with a 21-7 record. Outfielder Austin Hays was selected in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft following the season. Coach Montez finished his 3 years as head coach at JU with an overall conference record of 39-29 and 3 straight trips to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. In addition to success on the field, his teams were also successful in the classroom boasting a team GPA of over a 3.1 in each of his three years as head coach. As associate head coach at JU for 8 years, he was part of 4 NCAA Regional Appearances and 3 Conference Championships, and gave JU its first ever first round pick in Chris Anderson who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers being selected as the 18th
pick overall in the 2013 MLB draft.
“I want to thank President Kevin Eichner and Director of Athletics Kevin Steele for giving me this unique opportunity to become the first ever head coach for OUAZ Spirit baseball and to build this baseball program from the ground up,” said OUAZ head coach Tim Montez. “The overall administration from top to bottom has been very impressive and has treated my wife Darleen and I with first class in every sense of the word. I have been blessed over the past 25 years to have coached at some great academic and athletic institutions at the D-1 level, but this might be the most excited I have been about teaching the great game of baseball in my career. God puts all of us in situations where we can have the most impact as a believer in Jesus Christ. I feel humbled and honored to be able to share my testimony and at the same time lead this new baseball program at OUAZ. My wife Darleen and I look forward to being part of the Spirit Family.”
Montez continued, “I look forward to getting on the road with my new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Ryan Cisterna, and finding players that want to become part of something truly special. Not only are we building a new athletic program but we will be able to see firsthand the exciting additions that will be under construction on the OUAZ campus. As with most things new, our baseball program will have its challenges, but if we can find student-athletes who can overcome that and share the vision that will be built both as an academic institution and athletic program, they will reap the rewards both on the playing field and in the classroom by the time they graduate and move on to become productive citizens in society. Also, having the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals Spring Training Facility right down the street as our home park will be a tremendous asset in recruiting in addition to a phenomenal private school academic experience.”
Prior to JU, Montez has worked at Fresno State (03-05), Arkansas (98-02), Cal State Northridge (97), UC Santa Barbara (94-96), and Pepperdine (89-90). Montez has coached, recruited or worked with 17 Major League Players including Russ Ortiz, Barry Zito, Michael Young, Matt Garza, Doug Fister, Cliff Lee, and Daniel Murphy.
Over the years, Montez has recruited or coached five 1st round draft picks, most recently the 2013 RHP Chris Anderson, who was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers as the 18th
Coach Montez and his wife Darleen were married on New Year’s Eve, 2015 and combined have 3 sons and one daughter. David, 29, Amy, 25, Ryan, 25, and Adam 15. They also have 5 grandkids between them, Aiden, 8, Lillyanna, 5, Sadie Mae, 2, Bryson, 10 months and Amberlyn was just born this past New Year’s Day. They all reside in Jacksonville, Florida.
