Barbara Dinneen, Ph.D.
Professor of English
Barbara Dinneen is Professor of English and Lead Faculty for Liberal Arts Studies at the College campus. She received her undergraduate degree from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, double majoring in English and History. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, emphasized medieval, 17th century, American, and 20th century British and American literature; and wrote her dissertation, Knee Deep in the Thing Not Named,
about the novels of Plains writer Willa Cather. Barbara has taught writing at Washington University, French at the University of Kansas, and, for sixteen years now, literature, history, and interdisciplinary liberal arts courses here at Ottawa University. She writes creatively (wrote a novel killing off her obstetrician titled The Doctor Came Due
, and is currently working on a lively satire of university life, tentatively titled Did, Done, Do
In her spare time, Barbara plants potatoes, harvests blackberries, sighs heavily, and goes canoe-camping when she can get to real water (Quetico and the Boundary Waters, for example). She has a messy office, but a big chair that she keeps clear for students who need a place to sit and drink tea.
