Former KU Basketball Star Wayne Simien to Speak at OU

WHAT:  Wayne Simien, former University of Kansas basketball star and a member of 2006 NBA Champion Miami Heat, will speak at Fredrikson Chapel on the campus of Ottawa University. This event is presented in partnership with the Braves Athletic Hall of Fame and the Dave C. Owen Leadership Institute, an institute founded to power students, faculty, staff, alumni and the OU community at large to engage in self-discovery and development of leadership talents.
 
WHO: Originally from Leavenworth, Kan., Wayne Simien became a household name in the Kansas City metro and surrounding areas for his domination on the basketball court. In 2001, he was named a McDonald’s All-American, recognized as one of the best high school basketball talents in the country. He traveled down the road to Lawrence and was a member of the University of Kansas men’s basketball team. During his time as a Jayhawk, he was named an All-American and was a Wooden Award finalist both his junior and senior years. His career ended as the Big 12 Player of the Year and a First Team All-American. In 2005, the Miami Heat drafted him 29th overall. He retired in 2009 and returned to Lawrence where he founded “Called to Greatness,” a Christian ministry that focuses on college students and athletics helping young men and women discover their calling through encouragement, fellowship and discipleship.
