Tribal Students

Ottawa University is privileged to carry on the legacy of providing a free education to Ottawa Tribe members that was begun by our Baptist and Tribal founders. Because of the special heritage you enjoy as part of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma, you are allowed to attend Ottawa University free of any tuition or room and board charges. This is due in part to the renewal and expansion of the original agreement by Chancellor Kevin Eichner in 2008. Since the agreement’s expansion, we have enjoyed more Tribe members on campus than ever before.

As you consider taking advantage of this agreement by enrolling at Ottawa University, an Ottawa University Enrollment Advisor can help you start the admissions process by reviewing the residential campus admissions requirements, as well as discussing your career objectives, evaluating any prior college credits, and answering any questions you may have. Your Enrollment Advisor will also direct you to:

  • Contact your Tribal Higher Education Office and begin the process for tuition assistance or scholarships
  • Complete the Federal Application for Free Student Aid
  • Complete the Bureau of Indian Affairs application
  • Consider all the residential campus programs for your course of study.
  • Remain in contact with your Tribal Higher Education Office so that you are aware of financial assistance or scholarship options.

FAFSA Information

This is the application that allows you to receive federal student aid for the upcoming school year.

We encourage you to file right away. There are types of federal student aid that are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, you can use last year’s tax data if you have not yet filed your 2022 taxes.

FSA ID In order to submit the FAFSA Students, parents, and borrowers are required to use an FSA ID, made up of a username and password, to access certain U.S. Department of Education websites. Your FSA ID is used to confirm your identity when accessing your financial aid information and electronically signing your federal student aid documents.

If you are a parent of a dependent student, you will need your own FSA ID if you want to sign your student's FAFSA electronically. If you have more than one student attending college, you can use the same FSA ID to sign all applications. Please note: Each FSA ID user must have a unique e-mail address.

You can create your FSA ID here.
IRS DATA RETRIEVAL If eligible you are required to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This tool allows students and parents to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and transfer the data directly into their FAFSA from the IRS website.

If you are ineligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to retrieve your tax return information, OU may require you or your parents’ (if you are a dependent student) IRS tax return transcript.
FAFSA The FAFSA can be submitted here. When submitting the FAFSA you will need the Ottawa University Federal School Code which is: 001937. For students starting with OU in the fall of 2024, you should file a 2024-2025 FAFSA.
