Lewis earned letters in football (1957-60), men’s basketball (1958-61), and track (1960-61).

He led the Braves to a four year record of 22-13 and to the 1960 KCAC Championship with a perfect 9-0 record under head coach Dick Peters. Lewis was a two-time First Team All-KCAC selection at running back in 1959 and in 1960. 

On the basketball court Lewis helped lead the Braves to a three year record of 40-31, to the 1958-59 KCAC Championship and an appearance in the Kansas NAIA Playoffs. He earned Honorable Mention All-KCAC honors in 1960-61 and was named team captain.

As a member of the track team he helped the Braves to a KCAC Team Championship in 1960. Lewis earned All-KCAC honors in the javelin in 1960 and in 1961.

After graduating from OU Lewis went on to coach high school football in Plains, Kan. where he coached two undefeated teams in 1961 and in 1962. Lewis then went on to teach and coach at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was professor and chairman of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department. He also served as head men’s and women’s track coach, director of the college intramural program, and defensive football coordinator. As a head track coach at Buena Vista, Lewis was named conference Coach of the Year in 1984.

Albert Lester "Butch" Lewis, Class of 1961, passed away on February 22nd in Mesa, Arizona.   Dr. Al Lewis was Director of Atheletics at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa for 18 years until he retired. He is survived by his wife Deanna and two sons, Brad and Blake.
