Dick Godlove began his college coaching career at Ottawa University in 1936 after six years at Leavenworth High School. He was head football, basketball and track coach, as well as serving as athletic director at OU.

As head football coach (1936-42) Godlove had a record of 37-13-6 for a .660 winning percentage. He led the Braves to two KS Conference Championships in 1938 and 1939. Godlove coached 27 All-Conference selections.

On the basketball court (1936-37 to 1942-43), Godlove led the Braves to an overall record of 64-53. During those years, the Braves won three straight conference championships and appeared in the NAIA National Tournament in 1937-38. Godlove coached 10 All-Conference selections.

Godlove led the OU track and field team to three conference Championships (1938, 1939, 1943). He coached 31 Individual Conference Champions and 104 All-Conference performers.

Godlove left OU in after the 1943 track season and was commissioned to the Navy pre-flight program. In 1945, he became the Director of Athletics and Physical Education at Washburn University. Godlove was also the head football and track coach. As head football coach (1946-58) he was 67 games, the second most in WU history. His 1949, 1953, and 1954 teams won the Central Intercollegiate Conference Championship (CIC). Godlove remained head track coach and Director of Athletics and Physical Education until he retired in 1970.

Godlove was very active in the NAIA, serving as the Association’s third president. He was director of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship in Kansas City, Mo. and was inducted into the Helms Foundation NAIA Track Hall of Fame in 1964.
