Schwartz earned letters in football (1955-57), men’s basketball (1954-55, 1956-58) and track (1955-58).

On the football field, Schwartz helped the Braves to a record of 7-20-0 under head coaches Paul J. Andree and Grover Nutt. He earned First Team All-KCAC honors in 1957 at tight end.

As a member of the OU men’s basketball team, Schwartz helped the Braves to a record of 45-29. He was part of two KCAC Championships and two appearances in the Kansas NAIA Playoffs. Schwartz was a starter on the 1957-58 KCAC Championship team that established a school record 15 straight victories and an undefeated KCAC record of 14-0.

On the track, Schwartz was part of three KCAC Team Championships (1956, 1957, 1958). He earned All-KCAC honors in the discus in 1956. In 1957, Schwartz earned All-KCAC honors in the javelin and in the discus. As a senior in 1958, he was named All-KCAC for the third time in the discus. Schwartz had a personal best throw in the discus at the 1958 KCAC Track and Field Championships with a then school record 148-10.5

After graduating from Ottawa University, Schwartz began his career in the military. For three years he was selected to the All-Marine Corps Track and Field team. Schwartz set a Marine Corps record in the discus, shattering the previous record set by Olympian Bob Mathias. For two years, he represented the Marines in the all-service and national AAU meets.
