Clarence Spong

Spong lettered in football (1930-31), men’s basketball (1930-32), and track (1928-29, 1931-32).

As a member of the OU football team Spong helped the Braves to a record of 6-9 under head coaches John S. Davis and Charles “Dee” Errikson. He earned Second Team All-KS Conference honors on defense as a lineman.

On the basketball court, Spong led the Braves to a record of 21-13 and two second place finishes in the Kansas Conference. He also helped OU to two AAU National Tournaments in Kansas City, Mo. under head coaches John S. Davis and Charles “Dee” Errikson.

Spong earned All-Kansas Conference honors in 1928 in the high jump and the pole vault. In 1931 he was the Kansas Conference Champion in the high jump and Spong earned All-KS Conference honors in the pole vault. A year later in 1932, Spong was the Kansas Conference Champion in the High Jump for the second straight season and earned All-KS Conference honors in the pole vault. He set the school record in 1932 in the high jump.

After graduating from Ottawa University, Spong became an educator and coach.
