Psychology Education and Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in psychology qualifies a person to assist psychologists and other professionals in community mental health centers, vocational rehabilitation offices, and correctional programs. A Master’s degree, licensure and/or certification may be required depending on job duties. PSY 12053 | General Psychology (3 Credits)
Introduces basic elements in understanding human behavior. Emphasis on basic concepts and terminology of psychology including the biological basis of behavior, sensation, perception, history of psychology, growth and development, motivation, learning, measurement and scientific methodology, emotion, personality, abnormal behavior, and psychotherapy.

PSY 20153 | Survey Developmental Psychology (3 Credits)
Study of child's developmental process from the prenatal stage to adulthood: physical, psychological and social changes a child goes through in order to adjust to his/her environment. Emphasis on areas of abuse and neglect and how they foster mental illness. Look at methods of changing behavior of children with problems.

PSY 32353 | Developmental Psychology (3 Credits)
Examines theory and research on issue of human growth and development.

MAT 20044 | Introduction to Statistics (4 Credits)
Offers the student an intuitive introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics covered include data organization, averages and variation, elementary probability theory, binomial and normal probability distributions, Central Limit Theorem, estimation, hypothesis testing, linear regression and correlation.  Prerequisite: Score of 16 on non-math track initial placement or MAT 10443 Intermediate Algebra.

PSY 36000 | Statistics for Social Sciences (3 Credits)
Introduction to descriptive, inferential, and other statistical techniques used in the social sciences along with contemporary methods of graphical data presentation. Topics include data collection procedures, measures of dispersion, correlation designs, probability, statistical inference, measures of effect size, analysis of variance, and regression. Prerequisites: MAT 10743 Foundations of Mathematics or higher level MAT course. Cross-listed with HUS 36000.

PSY 30153 | Theories of Personality (3 Credits)
Emphasizes modern psychoanalytic, behaviorist and humanistic theories of personality development. Prerequisites: PSY 12053. 

PSY 31354 | Psysiological Psychology (3 Credits)
Examines physical basis of human behavior and experience, how the brain and nervous system work, information flow, and processing at higher levels of organization. Addresses issues of intelligence, consciousness, addictions, and deviant behavior from a neurophysiological standpoint.

PSY 32253 | Research Design and Analysis (3 Credits)
Reviews basic research methods focusing on conceptual basis for experimentation. Includes basic design components such as control, sampling, data collection, and analysis. Prerequisites: PSY 12053 General Psychology and PSY 36000 Statistics for Social Sciences or MAT 20044 Introduction to Statistics

PSY 30353 | Psychopathology (3 Credits)
Study of biological, psychological and sociocultural influences contributing to abnormal behavior patterns. Includes history, identification, diagnosis, and treatment of various psycho-pathological disorders.

PSY 32153 | Social Psychology (3 Credits)
Examines social influences on human behavior including attitude formation and change, influence and persuasion, social attraction, theories of aggression, conformity, cultural impact, leadership styles, power and status, social roles, and environmental influences. 

PSY 40854 | History and System of Psychology (3 Credits)
Reviews historical antecedents of contemporary psychology, critical analysis of selected psychological theories and discussion of application of these theories in contemporary psychology. Prerequisites: PSY 12053.

PSY 49053 | Senior Comprehensive (3 Credits)
Examination or project designed to assess student's acheivement of goals or his/her major program. Prerequisites: PSY 12053, PSY 32253, and PSY 30353. 

PSY 49201 | Seminar in Psychology (4 Credits)
Capstone course that guides students in development of integrative written project that demonstrates personal achievement of learning outcomes in the psychology major. Culminates in a major theoretical paper, written in APA format, investigating and discussing a major issue or issues within the field and presented in seminar form in class. Prerequisites: PSY 12053, PSY 30353, and PSY 32253
