The future of education depends on strong leaders across all areas of this field – from teachers to administrators to specialized paths, such as school psychologists and guidance counselors. Pathways are available for Kansas licensure and Arizona certification.

Ottawa’s MAED program provides busy educators with the flexibility to learn on their own time, day or night, while preparing to take on the current challenges in education, in areas such as curriculum, technology and instruction. With an online master’s degree in education from Ottawa University, you will expand your impact as an educator and on our nation’s schools.

The core curriculum of OU's MAED is designed to help the adult student acquire subject matter mastery, apply knowledge and conduct research in various areas within the field of education. The 36-hour program of study consists of foundation (including a master’s research project), concentration, and elective courses (in some programs).

Education Concentrations

Ottawa’s MAED lets candidates focus their learning with one of five concentration areas. You will tailor your master’s degree in education by selecting one of the concentrations below (must choose one):

OU’s Master of Arts in Education is a variable semester credit hour program depending on one’s study concentration. Admission requires a bachelor's degree (B.S., BA, or B.Ed.) in education. The program has been created to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to: (1) improve and enhance their teaching and services to students; (2) provide their students with an enhanced learning environment; (3) prepare and plan for change in schools; (4) assist schools and the community to improve education for all students; (5) assess outcomes of school curricula, programs, services, and activities; (6) assume leadership roles in education; and (7) engage in continued professional growth.

Students in OU’s MAEd program can earn their teaching degree in Arizona or Kansas. The education major is based on state, regional, and national licensure criteria and testing competencies. The Ottawa University teacher education programs are state approved in Arizona and Kansas and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Why Earn a Masters in Education?

It has been widely understood that if the U.S. expects greater returns on its investments in education, we are going to need to put highly qualified, innovative minds in teaching and administrative positions. A Master of Arts in Education is a prerequisite for many education positions and is recognized by school districts as a valuable credential. The MAED gives educators the knowledge and skills to inspire and encourage a love of learning and the techniques to handle diverse classrooms and learning styles, as well as preparing educators to utilize high-level teaching methodologies and provide the tools to make work in the education field more effective and efficient.
