Rich History of Experience in Higher Education

Second, we have been around a while. Established in 1865, Ottawa University was a pioneer in adult higher education and opened its first adult campus in Kansas City in 1974, moving to Overland Park in 2006. Not only that, OU has been a continually accredited university by the Higher Learning Commission since 1914. Why does that matter? It matters because OU has been around the block; we’ve navigated the many changes in higher education for one and a half centuries, and in adult higher education for nearly 50 years. We have successfully adapted to stay relevant and to continually provide quality, accredited degree programs to meet the needs of our students.

Flexible Schedules

Having a flexible schedule to complete coursework when it is convenient for you without having to come to campus works best for many students. Most programs can be completed 100% online. The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to choose one or the other. You can usually take a hybrid approach by taking some classes at the campus and some online classes.

In-person classes are offered in the evening, once per week. So, whether you work in Kansas City, MO, Kansas City, KS, right here in Overland Park, or within easy driving distance, our on-campus evening classes better fit your schedule as a working professional.

Another perk of OU’s flexible schedule is the fact that all of our evening and online programs are offered in eight-week terms, with six terms per year. This allows you the option of taking courses one at a time year-round, taking a term off, or taking multiple courses concurrently.

Degree Options

What about our degree programs? If you attend Ottawa University in Overland, KS, you will appreciate the many options that are available - 21 undergraduate and 12 graduate programs to choose from. OU is constantly assessing the marketplace to identify careers and skills that are in demand. If those are in line with our liberal arts and institutional values, we often design new accredited degree programs to meet that demand. For example, one of the newest graduate programs at the Overland Park campus is the MA in Education – Educational Leadership degree offering. Other popular graduate programs include Executive Master of Business Administration, MA in Human Resources, MA in Accountancy, MS in Nursing, and MS in Addiction Counseling. Some of the in-demand undergraduate degrees include Business Administration, Nursing, Health Care Management (Clinical and Non-Clinical Tracks), Human and Social Services, Accounting, Management of Information Systems and Psychology.

Each of these programs is comprised of student-centered courses that maximize your learning experience through relevant peer and faculty interactions, real-world applications of knowledge, and coursework that addresses the whole person - spiritual, moral, civic, and intellectual. Student-centered also means that class sizes are small enough to ensure you get the personal attention you need.

Faculty Committed to Your Success

Another thing to appreciate about OU? Our faculty are professors AND professionals who bring real-world experience to the classroom. Whether they are teaching in-person or online classes, you will be struck by their expertise and knowledge. Our diverse faculty use multiple approaches to teaching which assure comprehensive and varied responses to students’ learning patterns; they bring sensitivity to different ethnicities and political configurations of the global community; and they demonstrate a commitment to social responsibility which asserts that the University’s education is of the heart and hand, as well as the intellect.

OU faculty are also dedicated to making sure you succeed. They go the extra mile to answer your questions, provide direction, and connect you with the resources you need – not just so you can get that coveted diploma, but also so you become a person who makes a difference in your profession, your family, and your community. Remember the “whole person” concept? It’s a real thing at OU.

Student-Centered Support

The faculty aren’t alone in their desire to see you succeed through their student-centered courses and support. You’ll have a whole team looking out for you. Your enrollment advisor will help you with admission requirements; your student success coach will help you stay on track with your educational goals through graduation; and your financial advisor will work to find any resources available to help pay for your degree. You’ll also have access to our 24/7 help desk and online tutoring services.

The Ottawa Spirit

We may have saved the best for last. Whether you attend Ottawa University online, in the evening, or at one of our residential campuses in Kansas or Arizona, you will experience the Ottawa Spirit – that nebulous yet palpable essence that has propelled the University forward for over one and a half centuries. Some have defined the Ottawa Spirit as a spirit of perseverance. Others, of service. Of grace. And of vision. The fact is, without all these, Ottawa University would not exist as it does today, an educational beacon that stands for something greater than earning a degree. By living out these characteristics as an institution, as well as personally by faculty, staff, students and alumni, the indomitable OU Spirit makes individuals, the school, the community, and the world a better place. We persevere in the face of hardship. We serve one another and those in need. We extend grace where it may not be expected or deserved. And we strategically envision the best and brightest for our students, the institution, our alumni, and beyond.

THAT is what you will become a part of when you attend Ottawa University, a fully accredited university in Overland Park, KS.
