Personal Growth Days

Personal Growth For The Whole Person

Many institutions offer courses in the liberal arts, science, humanities, and education. But OUAZ in Surprise goes well beyond these traditional courses of study to assess your personal strengths, weaknesses and life aspirations, and then augment your traditional coursework and co-curricular activities with workplace and experiential learning opportunities to make sure you develop real, work-ready skills, not just knowledge.
OUAZ is so committed to the notion that students should develop work-ready and practical life skills that it has virtually eliminated standard classes on Wednesdays of each 8 week term. During OUAZ’s unique “Personal Growth Days,” Wednesdays are set aside for advising, tutoring and private study in the morning. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., OUAZ hosts “The Gathering,” a program which offers worship, chapel experiences, outside speakers, special entertainment, and other programmatic events to be followed by a luncheon in which all students, faculty and staff as well as guests come together for a community dining experience.

Following the weekly Gathering events, you will attend workshops of approximately 1.5 hours in length. These workshops are virtually identical to those offered in professional development training programs by corporations and non-profit organizations. They are aimed at honing and shaping your competencies in areas such as public speaking, project management, leadership, writing for business, negotiations, personal finance, how to persuade, personal selling, research, conflict management, listening, group facilitation, and many more. These are skills that employers of all types prize and will set you apart as a work-ready graduate when it is time to land that first job. In addition, each student will be encouraged to develop conversational capability in at least one additional language.

Personal Growth Days are also designed to offer an array of service learning, shadowing and other experiential learning and service opportunities, within teams and as individuals. OUAZ grads will undoubtedly point to these experiences as many of their most impactful “Aha!” moments in their educational careers.
