About our School Business Operations Concentration

Ottawa University Adult and Online MBA students can now select a new track in School Business Operations (SBO).  SBO is a specialty area within the K-12 school settings management that is focused on supporting all public districts in the 50 states, as well as the growing charter and private school sectors. These organizations are subject to state and federal regulations and management specifications that require a specialized knowledge-base not currently included in either business or education majors.  
The combination of the MBA major with select education courses will prepare business administration students with the specific knowledge necessary for employment in school business offices by providing an understanding of the education environment, laws, and regulations governing school administration/operations with advanced courses for all three education models.  This track will lead to school leadership positions like:  Directors of Business, Purchasing, Transportation, Maintenance, Food Services, Human Resources, and Information Technology as well as Assistant Superintendents and Financial Officers.

This 36-credit-hour Master’s in Business Administration program consists of eight required core courses and four courses designed specifically for those in the School Business Operations track:

  • School Law 
  • Field Experience in Education I

MBA with School Business Operations Concentration (36 credit hours)

School Business Operations Concentration Courses (12 credit hours)

Education Law | EDC 7153 (3 credit hours) 
Examination of federal and state statues, agencies, and court decisions in education; including administrative and teacher rights, responsibilities, relationships, and liabilities.

School and Community Relations | EDC 7713 (3 credit hours) 
Examines the policies, practices, and strategies in school and community relations. Topics include public information techniques and procedures.

School Finance | EDC 7743 (3 credit hours) 
Covers the economics of school finance relating to theories and principles of taxation, reimbursement, financial planning and budgeting; governmental impact, court intervention and the effects on public and non-public schools. Practical applications using local school district situations will be considered when possible.

Field Experience in Education I | EDC 8453 (3 credit hours) 
Individually designed course offering opportunity to integrate course knowledge with practical experience in an educational setting. Approved written proposal required.

Module 1 - Behavioral Courses (6 credit hours)

Organizational Behavior and Theory | BUS 7000 (3 credit hours) 
Examines human behavior as it impacts the work organization. Includes theoretical foundations of motivation, group dynamics, leadership, decision-making, satisfaction and performance.

Value Systems and Professional Ethics | BUS 7200 (3 credit hours) 
Study of personal and corporate value systems and decision making. Investigation of personal beliefs, purposes and attitudes, and their effects on self and others. Examines the ethical dimensions of organizational structures and practices.

Module 2 - Core Courses (15 credit hours)

Strategic Marketing | BUS 7450 (3 credit hours) 
Covers the identification and selection of marketing opportunities, target markets and design, and implementation and evaluation of marketing programs.

Managerial Economics | BUS 7500 (3 credit hours)
Application of economic theory to managerial. Emphasis on both quantitative and qualitative application of microeconomic principles to business analysis.

Managerial Finance | BUS 7600 (3 credit hours)  
Application of the theories and tools used in financial decision making. Topics include present value and capital budgeting, financial analysis and forecasting, market efficiency and capital structure.

Management Information Systems | BUS 7700 (3 credit hours)
Examines the use of computer information systems in business organizations with emphasis on how information technology supports business functions and aids managerial decision-making. Explores current trends and emerging technologies.

Management Accounting | BUS 7800 (3 credit hours) 
Explore use and application of accounting information for planning, control and decision making. Topics include: cost analysis and allocation, budgeting and behavioral aspects of accounting systems.

Module 3 - Capstone Course (3 credit hours)

Graduate Seminar: Business Policies and Strategy | BUS 8500 (3 credit hours)   
Capstone course in which participants develop a major case study of business administration issues, programs and policies in a current organization. Draws from and utilizes concepts, theories, and skills developed in previous courses.
